Nespolo del Giappone Pt 18
The Eriobotrya japonica, commonly known as the Loquat or "Nespolo" (Naspli), is a handsome, evergreen, small-to-medium-sized tree prized for its large, leathery, dark-green leaves and its clusters of sweet, tangy, orange-yellow fruit. In warmer climates like Malta, it thrives as a garden tree, but it can also be successfully cultivated in large containers for patios or sunrooms.
☀️ Light: Bright, direct sunlight. To produce fruit and maintain a healthy, compact shape, the Loquat requires at least 6 to 8 hours of full, direct sun daily.
💧 Water: Moderate. Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Allow the top few centimeters of soil to dry out between waterings. In pots, ensure excellent drainage to prevent the roots from sitting in stagnant water.
🌡️ Temperature: Warm to Temperate. It prefers a subtropical climate. While it can handle mild frosts, it needs protection from extreme cold or heavy frost, which can damage the delicate flower buds and fruit.
⚠️ Toxicity: Moderate Toxicity. While the fruit flesh is safe for humans, the leaves, seeds, and pits contain cyanogenic glycosides, which are toxic to dogs and cats if ingested and can cause serious health issues. Keep the tree away from pets, particularly the fallen fruit pits.
