Majorana (Majorana hortensis or Origanum majorana), commonly known as sweet marjoram, is a classic aromatic herb native to the Mediterranean region. It is closely related to oregano but features a much sweeter, milder, and delicate flavor with subtle citrus and pine notes.

  • 🌱 Sowing: from March to May (in a protected seedbed, or directly outdoors once the danger of frost has passed and temperatures are mild).
  • ☀️ Exposure: in full Sun ☀️, as it thrives in bright, sunny locations which help maximize the concentration of its aromatic essential oils.
  • 💧 Watering: moderate and regular during dry periods, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings to prevent root rot, as it dislikes excessive moisture.
  • 🌿 Soil & Care: light, loose, and well-draining soil, ideally slightly alkaline or neutral. Regular trimming or harvesting of the tips encourages the plant to grow bushier and prevents it from becoming woody too quickly.
  • ✂️ Harvesting: from June to October, cutting the stems just before or as the flowers begin to open, which is when the leaves are most fragrant.
  • ❄️ Winter Protection: in regions with mild winters, it acts as a perennial; in colder areas with harsh winters, it is often grown as an annual or protected indoors in pots during the cold months.
