The Polygala myrtifolia, often called the Sweet Pea Shrub or Myrtle-leaved Milkwort, is a quintessential Mediterranean plant. It is a dense, evergreen shrub known for its beautiful, pea-like purple-magenta flowers that bloom almost continuously throughout the year, especially in the mild climate of Malta.
☀️ Light: Full sun to partial shade. This plant thrives in bright, sunny conditions. While it can handle partial shade, providing at least 4–6 hours of direct sunlight will result in much more prolific and continuous flowering.
💧 Water: Moderate. Once established in the ground, it is quite drought-tolerant. However, for container-grown plants in the Qormi summer heat, you should water whenever the top 3–5 cm of soil feel dry. Always ensure the pot has excellent drainage to prevent root rot.
🌡️ Temperature: Warm to temperate. It is perfectly suited for Malta’s climate. It is frost-tolerant to a degree, but prefers to be protected from harsh, drying winds, which can damage its delicate blooms.
⚠️ Toxicity: Generally considered non-toxic. While not listed as highly toxic, it is always best practice to discourage pets from grazing on garden shrubs to avoid potential mild stomach upset.
