At Derek Garden Centre, we believe that no space is beyond saving, it is simply waiting for the right transformation. One of our most ambitious and rewarding projects of 2026 has been the total reclamation of a former, derelict oil storage site in Birgu, transforming it into a vibrant, 1,500-square-metre sustainable public park along the waterfront.
This project perfectly showcases our capacity for large-scale, turn-free interventions. Our team managed and executed every single phase of the build, from the initial heavy excavation and civil engineering to the final landscape styling.
The starting point required deep technical intervention. Given the site’s industrial history and heavy concrete footprint, our team undertook the demolition, clearing, and heavy earthworks. Preparing this terrain safely and sustainably was the critical first step in breathing new life into this coastal area.
We constructed the entire framework of the park, balancing modern functionality with deep respect for the surrounding historic fortifications.
The final layer was giving the space its green soul, using a design tailored to the Mediterranean climate and future sustainability:
What stood for over a decade as an industrial scar is now a dynamic, accessible, and breathing green lung for the Birgu and Cottonera communities.
At Derek Garden Centre, we are proud to deliver this project as a true turn-key success, proving that we possess the expertise to take a project from concrete and raw earth all the way to a flourishing natural sanctuary.
